We are proud to have delivered another successful project in collaboration with English Heritage, the striking new Visitor Centre and exhibition space at Grimes Graves, Norfolk.
Grimes Graves is an extraordinary complex of prehistoric flint mines dating back over 4,500 years, recognised as the oldest known human-made underground space in England. Working closely with English Heritage and specialist archaeologists, our approach prioritised sensitivity and precision, ensuring the new structure had minimal impact on this nationally significant site.
The project revealed remarkable archaeological finds, including previously unseen flint tools such as axes, sickles and circular knives, offering fresh insight into Britain’s prehistoric past.
The building’s innovative design features a curved entrance ramp leading to a circular structure that sits harmoniously within the landscape. The Architects for the project were Mawsonkerr and the Structural Engineers were Ramboll UK Limited.
Constructed predominantly from Douglas Fir, the building is supported by a kingpost piled solution and a suspended steel raft, and finished with a zinc roof. One of the project’s most significant technical challenges was the installation of the piles, which required an exceptional tolerance of just 5mm to ensure precise alignment with the steel structure.
This project stands as a testament to careful collaboration, technical excellence, and respect for one of the UK’s most unique archaeological landscapes.
